Google and social networking
Social networking websites (craigslist, linkedin, hi5, friendster, myspace) all provide an engaging way to interact with new and old people alike. At the top of the game is MySpace, a California based company with over 15 million members (including myself.) Although some may think these sites are a waste of time, or flooded with attention seeking people, I remain intrigued. The fact of the matter is that ’social networking’ is still in its infancy, and will only evolve overtime. The concept of social networks have even spunoff many ‘child technologies,’ such as blogs, podcasting, etc. Indeed, it’s an exciting time to be involved with technology. Even Microsoft (MSN Spaces) and Yahoo are in on the social networking game. However, one prominent web giant is missing–Google.
What Google has planned for social networking is anyone’s guess. However, I believe Google is doing one of the following:
1). Developing its own social networking platform (combining its own technologies, along with Blogger, Picasa, and Google Maps)
2). Preparing to buy a social network website outright (the likely candidate, in my opinion, should be MySpace.)
Regardless of Google’s social networking plans, it will quickly become the #1 spot for such websites. A good example of Google’s innovative approach to technolog is Google Maps: It’s by far THE best online mapping website ANYWHERE. It BLOWS the competition AWAY. Stay tuned…as I am certain Google will announce something in the coming months.
