Google and social networking

Social networking websites (craigslist, linkedin, hi5, friendster, myspace) all provide an engaging way to interact with new and old people alike. At the top of the game is MySpace, a California based company with over 15 million members (including myself.) Although some may think these sites are a waste of time, or flooded with attention seeking people, I remain intrigued. The fact of the matter is that ’social networking’ is still in its infancy, and will only evolve overtime. The concept of social networks have even spunoff many ‘child technologies,’ such as blogs, podcasting, etc. Indeed, it’s an exciting time to be involved with technology. Even Microsoft (MSN Spaces) and Yahoo are in on the social networking game. However, one prominent web giant is missing–Google.

What Google has planned for social networking is anyone’s guess. However, I believe Google is doing one of the following:

1). Developing its own social networking platform (combining its own technologies, along with Blogger, Picasa, and Google Maps)
2). Preparing to buy a social network website outright (the likely candidate, in my opinion, should be MySpace.)

Regardless of Google’s social networking plans, it will quickly become the #1 spot for such websites. A good example of Google’s innovative approach to technolog is Google Maps: It’s by far THE best online mapping website ANYWHERE. It BLOWS the competition AWAY. Stay tuned…as I am certain Google will announce something in the coming months.

Michael McDonald performs at Oprah’s event

I found out recently that my mentor in music, Michael McDonald, was THE entertainer for Oprah’s recent extravaganza in Santa Barbara, California: Oprah’s Legend Ball! Of ALL the entertainers/celebrities Oprah could have hired, she chose Michael — and what a great choice, indeed. I heard it was a great time.

It’s Friday again, and it’s time to do something fun! I am planning to see the new movies Crash, and House of Wax. Aside from that, I am simply enjoying my time in Denver–it’s a wonderful city, and I’ve decided to relocate here.

Have a fun-filled weekend!

Craigslist: The underground phenomenon

If you’ve never heard of Craigslist, you’re not alone. Nor has the hundreds of news media professionals present at a recent industry function. However, millions more have–and use the service on a daily basis. I have recently used Craigslist for a number of tasks, and am quite pleased with the results. From jobs to classified ads for personals and goods, there’s a community bursting with activity. I have recommended several people to this wonderful community, and did I mention that it’s FREE? Unless you’re a posting a job, everything else require ZERO. NO DINERO! NADA! Hop to it, and check them at http://www.craigslist.org.

My prediction: Craigslist will become the de facto standard in online classifed ads (if it hasn’t already.) I see nothing but growth for these guys, given their grass-roots, humbling approach to online commerce and community.
