EC2 Consulting: Referral program for Amazon EC2

April 27, 2008 · Filed Under Consulting, Technology · Comment

To help accelerate my Amazon EC2 consulting goals (at least 10 clients per month to start), I am considering a referral program which will pay $50-$100 per paying referral. This is a great and easy way for someone to make extra money referring potential clients to my services.

If you’re not aware of Amazon EC2, there’s a lot of information available here. In a nutshell, it’s a phenomenal, mass utility computing platform which utilizes Amazon’s multi-billion dollar IT infrastructure to power web applications and more.

EC2 Consulting: Asterisk PBX and Amazon EC2

April 25, 2008 · Filed Under Consulting, Stuff I'm Up To, Technology · 1 Comment

For a few months now, I’ve evaluated, tested and deployed various images (virtual servers) and applications on Amazon’s robust EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) platform. I not only host various websites on the service, but also databases, files and even Digium’s Asterisk PBX!

Two months ago, I installed the Asterisk PBX (I like to compile the code, rather than using packages) to one of my EC2 servers for testing. Everything worked flawlessly, except an annoying SIP over NAT issue which prevented the passing of audio between clients and the server. Now that I’ve corrected it, I recently transitioned my Asterisk configuration away form home to Amazon EC2.

The result? Success! I couldn’t be happier with the performance of my PBX on Amazon EC2 when compared to my Dell PowerEdge 2400 server at home. Now, I can add even more phone lines and features thanks to the increase in processing power and bandwidth.

This is telephony on steroids!

EC2 Consulting: Amazon EC2 + WordPress 2.5 = Perfection!

April 24, 2008 · Filed Under Consulting, On The Horn, Technology · Comment

Yesterday, I upgraded ronaldlewis.com to WordPress 2.5. Overall, I really like the feel and presentation of the upgraded dashboard, among many things. As a blogging platform, WordPress and the team at Automattic have once again raised the bar for blogging and instant publishing. There are noticeable improvements in performance as well. And, using Amazon EC2 as my preferred host provider makes for a complete and great web experience.

Proceed with Caution: Site refresh a bit ‘buggy’

Just a quick note that some posts aren’t rendering correctly today. The cause? I refreshed the site today with a new theme and it appears to have an annoying bug in the formatting of certain posts. Looking for the cause and expect things to be normal again soon. Thanks for reading!

DataPortability: New Logo Based on Draft Submission

April 23, 2008 · Filed Under On The Horn, Stuff I'm Up To · 2 Comments

In late February, DataPortability announced a logo design competition to avoid a legal dispute with RedHat (their logo was too similar to their own). I submitted several conceptual designs, of which were well received. Today, the official logo was announced and I’m honored that the chosen logo is based on one of my designs.

Original submission which inspired new logo

As you can see, the design isn’t much different from the one I submitted. The orientation was changed and the “paths” shortened and broken to denote “data transfer”. It’s a great logo, and again, I’m pleased that my original draft work inspired it.

Finally, the designer did seek my permission before submitting this logo to the competition.
