DataPortability: New Logo Based on Draft Submission

April 23, 2008 · Filed Under On The Horn, Stuff I'm Up To

In late February, DataPortability announced a logo design competition to avoid a legal dispute with RedHat (their logo was too similar to their own). I submitted several conceptual designs, of which were well received. Today, the official logo was announced and I’m honored that the chosen logo is based on one of my designs.

New DataPortability logo

Original submission which inspired new logo

As you can see, the design isn’t much different from the one I submitted. The orientation was changed and the “paths” shortened and broken to denote “data transfer”. It’s a great logo, and again, I’m pleased that my original draft work inspired it.

Finally, the designer did seek my permission before submitting this logo to the competition.
