America: We Need To Work on Our ‘Identity Crisis’

September 1, 2008 · Filed Under On The Horn, Politics and Government, Random Blurbs

If we are Americans, then we should choose to be so. Referring to Barack Obama as an ‘African-American’ is an insult. Obama wasn’t born in Africa. He’s an American-born citizen, just like myself. Most people won’t believe this, but we have a identity crisis here in America. And, as long as it continues, we’ll always cling to identities which serve no purpose than to divide like people.

We really need to work on our identity here in America. For too long, we’ve been divided and defined by categories and classes with no biological meaning or relevance. We need to work on reversing the impact of this social disease (if that’s even possible).

We need to reconsider what it means to be an American. Hyphenating the nationality of fellow Americans is a denial of their citizenship and their true identity.

    Ronald,

I love the intention you express with this blog post. If I may I offer a perspective, change “we have been divided” to “we have divided ourselves”. “We have been” reads to close to the effects of exterior circumstances. It is not until we claim our faults that we can begin to correct them. This method can be a applied from an individual to the national level that you seek to change.

    Happy Labor Day,

    Mario
