Montel Williams: Quitting Is Not An Option

Posted in All by Ronald Lewis

Variety reported on Wednesday (January 30, 2008) that Montel Williams has called it quits after key Fox-owned stations opted not to renew Montel for the 2008-2009 season. This decision by News Corp. is likely due to Montel recently challenging the status quo of the mainstream during his appearance on “Fox and Friends” (which is embedded below).

After 17 years as a respected TV personality, I must object to Mr. Williams making this decision. Of course, it’s his to make, but I feel there are other alternatives to continue his platform of reaching out to our society with thought provoking segments. Montel, your gig isn’t up, for your voice cannot be silenced.

I’ve heard Montel criticized for shilling on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry, for supporting Sylvia Browne, for exploiting people who have experienced tragedies…bottom line, he helped a lot of people and he brought good information about a lot of interesting subjects into the limelight. I think 19 years is a damn good run, and whether he was forced out or quit, I doubt this will be the last we hear from him.

Marsha: I think Montel had a good point about the media’s obsession with Heath Ledger’s death. This was confirmed by the female co-anchor’s comments of “feeding the beast” — The mainstream media’s spin on the news is nothing short of disgusting.

Chatty: Love or hate Sylvia Browne, outside of her appearances, Montel had some pretty good segments that focused on key issues in our country. He was far more tolerable and respectable than Maury or Jerry Springer.

Ronald Ronald, who cares about Montel leaving. Who watches him as I sit here transcribing 14 hours a day 6 days weekly just to pay rent. Montel exploits persons and his kind of shows I am glad are gone as they are just crap.

Montel is so honest. I feel the same and pray for the troops. I am sick of hearing about Heath and what an icon he was. Tell instead that he was a father, etc. The only thing I can think of that he did was play a homosexual cowboy in a grade B movie.
