Special thanks to GigaOM for reporting this story

Thousands of AT&T customers with Apple iPhones are expressing outrage over the company’s “surcharge” to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G S. And rightfully so. While the world was slamming AT&T over their miscalculated move, I sold my 16GB iPhone 3G and reserved my 32GB iPhone 3G S for $299. View the slideshow that confirms my pricing.

Know what’s funny? I’ve only fulfilled eleven months of my AT&T contract. Here are a few suggestions for AT&T customers:

Dial ‘611′ from your iPhone

Inquire about your eligiblity to upgrade

Kindly explain to the CSR that you’d like your eligbility corrected

If the above doesn’t work;

Stress that you’ve been a loyal customer

Stress that you’d like to remain a loyal customer

Remain kind and calm while working with the CSR

Using a variety of techniques, AT&T credited my account $59.99 last month for “being a good customer.” And the only reason I’ve reserved my new iPhone for $299 is because I asked. I made sure ahead of time that my account would qualify without the headaches fellow subscribers are experiencing now. I did this months ago and followed up several times to confirm there wouldn’t be any last minute surprises.

Be sure to pick up a copy of my new book, Stick It To The Man, on June 23 at your favorite bookseller in the US or Canada. There’s a seven part series on cell carriers that will be useful for these type of issues.

STICK IT TO THE MAN
How to Skirt the Law, Scam Your Enemies, and Screw Big, Fat, Stupid, Lazy Corporations…For Fun and Profit! By Ronald Lewis

Have you ever called customer service only to spend two hours on hold and have a representative give you the brush off? Has your local barista ever handed you a cold, bitter cup of coffee that you couldn’t return because the line behind you was trailing out the door?

Has a truck driver ever gotten behind you on the highway, riding your bumper, making your commute a living hell? You’re not helpless or alone. Here’s something you can do about it. Read Stick it to the Man: How to Skirt the Law, Scam Your Enemies, and Screw Big, Fat, Stupid, Lazy Corporations…For Fun and Profit! Ronald Lewis will teach you how to level the playing field, instead of angrily chewing on your nails and ripping out your hair.

His advice will help you:

Make your credit card company fight for you

Find easy ways to fight parking tickets

Successfully eliminate spam

Avoid costly mechanic fees

Beat those expertly worded cell phone contracts

Get free upgrades when you fly

In the end, you will be the one laughing your way to the bank as companies get a taste of their own medicine. Chapters include Insuring Yourself Against the Shady Practices of Insurance Companies, Escaping the Bondage of Contract Hell, and Demanding Better Service from Companies with Horrible Phone Support. Lewis’s sarcastic, playful tone turns this manual for life in the twenty-first century into a sinfully guilty pleasure equipping you to reassess everyday situations. Read this book and learn to beat “the man,” whomever that may be: the local coffee shop, a boss, some crazy trucker, or a noisy neighbor.

From the day I was offered the opportunity to write this book, I have had a million thoughts about it. Now that it’s done, a new wave of thoughts now cloud my mind:

Perception

How will the general public respond to a book from someone they’ve never heard of in publishing? Will they embrace it? Tell friends about it?

Sales

Book publishers everywhere are cutting back in this recession: Advances, marketing, and more. How will this affect my debut as a new author?

Promotion

I’ve never promoted a book before, and publishers these days are only doing so much to support the books they publish. I’ve been talking to bestselling authors, and picking the brains of friends who’ve published their own books as well for ideas. Still, it’s pretty overwhelming when I think about the task at hand: How do I best promote this book on my own online and elsewhere?

Tour

This is the biggest thing on my mind: Where can I drum up support for a major tour? I’m not endowed with the capital to travel most of North America for several months in support of the book. Where do I turn? Who do I call? Who are the people that will believe in this book and support it?

Appearances

I’ve been rehearsing for book store appearances here in Colorado. While I’ve seen authors in the past talk about their books, I want to do things a little differently. One thing I want to avoid is a monologue, because this book isn’t about me alone — It’s about all of us and the challenges we face on many fronts around the world. What is the best approach to all of this? What should I talk about? How shall I address negative people?

With 2.5 months to go until the book is released in stores and online, I’m growing more anxious with each passing day. One thing is certain: I’m determined to make this book a success.

Based on early feedback from the publisher and the relevance of Stick It To The Man to the global economic crisis, the following cities were selected to support a North American tour. Some might argue against a road tour for a book, but considering the times and my desire to build a connection with the public, it’s essential that this tour is realized.

It is my mission to be more than just a book author on tour. I plan to meet as many people as possible, listening to their stories, and putting the people in the spotlight. To support the tour, efforts are underway to identify and secure sponsors to cover the costs of an RV, fuel, food, lodging, etc. More than a book tour, it’s a dream opportunity to intimately engage those who’ve fought back against the lopsided world of power and law.

The global economic crisis — mostly fueled by the housing collapse in America — has been a nightmare for citizens around the world. Civil unrest is rising and governments are collapsing due to the fallout in the world’s economy. This global event is due to the unraveling of yet another failed scheme to artificially inflate America’s prosperity. Now, banks, fund managers, and other participants are reeling from the collapse of these imaginary “get rich quick” scams.

Fortunately, citizens around the world now have a new tool to combat the lopsided world of the law and power: Stick It To The Man. Here are just a few examples of why my new book is relevant to this global event:

Exposes the culprits partly responsible

Stick It To The Man covers everything from the Federal Reserve to retailers — All participants in the unraveling of the world’s economy. In plain English, the book explains the history of America’s central bank and how it has impacted the U.S. economy in its almost one-hundred year history.

Helps struggling individuals and families save money

With the uncertainty surrounding the U.S. economy, individuals and families have cut back drastically on their spending, forcing major retail companies to shutter their doors for good (Circuit City, Linens N’ Things). Americans have become very frugal and are seeking ways to save more money than ever before. Stick It To The Man features money-saving information on everything from cell phone service to the taxes.

Encourages the creation of new businesses

Stick It To The Man contains practical information and suggestions to kickstart new business ideas at home. Millions of jobs have been lost in the past year and unemployment is rising due to the economic crisis. In today’s world, few jobs are secure as companies seek to survive the worst economic downturn in decades.

I’ll continue to blog about the book’s relevance to the current crisis, so stay tuned!
